We all remember the chaos of the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic — conflicting information was everywhere and guidelines evolved in real time. No one experienced the overwhelm of these months as acutely as healthcare workers. When we were approached by the folks at UBC Rural Medicine to design a platform for healthcare workers to pool and systematize information about Covid, we were honoured to help. We worked around the clock and had the platform up and running within a month.
The keys to REAKT were speed and scannability— healthcare workers needed to be able to rapidly access the latest reliable information and react in real-time. REAKT allowed physicians to both search for articles related to their inquiries in a centralized, reliable database and to submit and answer specific questions. A team at UBC monitored and amalgamated similar queries in order to create an ad-hoc peer review process. This kind of information-sharing was especially vital for physicians practicing in rural contexts, giving them immediate access to data as pockets of discovery were scattered throughout the province.
